Invisible braces or traditional braces?
Traditional braces have been the standard orthodontic treatment for decades. These involve metal brackets securely attached to your teeth, connected by a wire that applies gentle pressure gradually. However, wearing traditional metal braces can be unappealing and uncomfortable due to the daily inconveniences. Fortunately, invisible braces are now available, offering a more comfortable and aesthetically pleasing alternative to traditional braces.
Let’s compare the two types and explain why invisible braces can be a better choice.
Advantages of Invisible Braces
- More Aesthetic: The first and perhaps most important advantage of invisible braces is their aesthetics. While traditional metal braces can be noticeable, invisible braces are almost invisible. The clear plastic aligners fit snugly over your teeth, so you don’t have to worry about your smile.
- More Comfortable: Metal wires and components often cause discomfort in your mouth, but this is not a problem with invisible aligners.
- Eat Without Restrictions: While many foods must be avoided with traditional metal braces, invisible aligners can simply be removed during meals, allowing you to eat anything you want. Afterwards, you can simply brush your teeth to keep them clean.
- Better Oral Hygiene: With traditional braces, wires and metal components make cleaning more difficult and time-consuming. Invisible braces can be easily removed from your teeth, and you can easily maintain good oral hygiene and reduce the risk of cavities and gum disease.
- Easy to Clean: The invisible aligners themselves are also easy to clean. All you need is a glass of water and a water-soluble cleaning tablet. Place the aligners in the glass and you’re done!
- Fewer and Shorter Dental Visits: With invisible braces, you need far fewer visits to your orthodontist, and each visit is much shorter – saving you both time and money. After the initial consultation, you can get up to eight weeks’ worth of aligners, or four per arch, in one visit.
- Predictable Results: Results are more predictable, as the 3D software-created treatment plan allows you to see in advance what your smile will look like after treatment.
- Often More Effective: Thanks to innovative force application technology, invisible braces are more efficient in treating certain orthodontic problems than fixed braces.
Disadvantages
While invisible braces offer numerous advantages, like any treatment, they also have their drawbacks. It’s important to consider these before making a decision:
- Limitations: Invisible braces aren’t suitable for treating every dental issue. In more severe cases, such as rotated teeth or complex bite problems, traditional metal braces may be more effective.
- Limited Space Creation: Aligners can’t expand the dental arch as much as fixed braces like Damon systems. Therefore, in cases of crowded teeth, it might be necessary to file down some teeth to create enough space.
- Higher Cost: The many advantages often come with a higher price tag. Invisible braces are generally more expensive than traditional metal braces. However, there are good and more affordable alternatives available that may not be more expensive than fixed braces.
- Requires Self-Discipline: Those who don’t wear the aligners for the required 20-22 hours daily won’t achieve the desired results. Invisible braces are only recommended for those who are disciplined and follow the orthodontist’s instructions.
