Damon Braces
Self-ligating, low-force braces are one the most significant developments in modern Orthodontics. We believe that Damon braces are one the best of these kinds of braces. Let us tell you why.
What is ligation?
In traditional orthodontics, small pads, called brackets, are placed on the teeth. The orthodontic archwire is attached to the bracket with either small rubber rings or wire in the traditional way. This is called rubber ligation or metal ligation, and the process is called ligation. During traditional ligation, the contact between the arch and the ligature is too tight, which causes more friction, making the treatment slower with traditional ligatures. In addition, traditional ligatures fatigue after 3 weeks and need to be reactivated, while self-ligating ligatures only need to be reactivated every 6 weeks, reducing the number of check-ups.
This all changed after Dr. Dwight H. Damon invented a revolutionary appliance that allowed orthodontic treatment with biological forces.
How self-ligating Damon fixed braces work
With Damon braces, self-ligating brackets are bonded to the teeth. These are very precise, tiny locking mechanisms that hold the orthodontic archwire to the brackets much more loosely than traditional ones.
As a result, Damon technology exerts an optimal, lower force on the teeth than traditional metal or rubber ligatures. There is much less friction between the archwire and the orthodontic brackets, so the arch is less stressed, resulting in less pain and discomfort. The teeth also move faster because of the easier-to-move arch, which makes the treatment shorter.
Due to the self-ligating design of the brackets and the optimal force delivery of the arches, the Damon system is capable of much more jaw expansion than traditional appliances, so if there is a lot of crowding in the dental arch, in most cases, we can expand/widen it enough to make room for the crowded teeth to line up next to each other. There is no need to extract teeth for this reason.
Benefits
- No tooth extraction required
Perhaps the most significant difference from traditional systems is that in traditional systems, tooth extraction is often recommended in crowded dentitions to carry out the treatment. With the Damon system, tooth extraction can be avoided in most cases!
Works with gentle force - Damon appliances exert their effect much more gently than traditional ones. Therefore, they are much less harmful to the jawbones and teeth.
Wider, fuller smile - Since tooth extraction is usually not necessary, the smile achieved with Damon braces is full at the end of the orthodontic treatment, and the facial features become harmonious.
- Fewer visits are required
It is also a great advantage that Damon braces require less frequent reactivation visits, as the appliance does not need to be adjusted as often as with traditional braces. A visit is also shorter because the appliance can be easily and quickly adjusted. There is much less pain during treatment. - Orthodontic treatment takes less time
The length of orthodontic treatment depends on the problem being treated and the individual’s dentition. However, in general, the Damon braces system can shorten the treatment time by up to several months. - No metal rings, palatal expansion required
Traditional braces often need to be supplemented with palatal elements, which are not exactly known for their comfort. With the Damon system, extremely beautiful results can be achieved even without palatal expander elements. - Easier to clean
Damon appliances are much easier to clean than traditional ones because they do not use rubber rings that make brushing difficult. This is an important consideration, as proper oral hygiene is essential during orthodontic treatment.
Damon Q metal braces
The Damon system uses rounded brackets with no protruding edges to secure the orthodontic archwire. It does not rust or discolour. It is easy to adjust and requires fewer, shorter visits during treatment. It works with gentle force, which is much more beneficial for teeth and bones. In most cases, it can achieve faster results than traditional braces.
