  1. When is is worth first seeing an orthodontist?
    The American Association of the Orthodontists recommend the age of 7. By this time many of the permanent teeth might have come out, therefore it is worth to gauge the progress of the development of the teeth and the jaws.
     
  2. Can the teeth become straight by themselves as we grow?
    No, the situation will not be solved spontaneously. At the area around the cutting teeth the space will not grow to a significant extent, what is more, most cases, when the permanent Molar teeth have come out, the available space decreases around the area of the cutting teeth.
     
  3. What essential questions are discussed on the first occasion?

    • Is orthodontic treatment necessary

    • How should we solve your problem

    • Is tooth extraction unavoidable

    • How long will the treatment last

    • How much will the whole treatment cost
       

  4. Do I need to have a tooth  or more teeth extracted for the orthodontic treatment?
    Sometimes in order to achieve the best result, teeth need to be extracted. The aim of the treatment is that the teeth stand straight, the bite become good and the profile harmonic. Fortunately today there are new methods which make tooth extraction avoidable.
     

  5. How long will the treatment last?
    The length of the treatment depends on the individual orthodontic problem. In case of small problems, it is about 6 months, more serious problems can last up to 12-18 months.
     

  6. How often do I need to go for check-ups with my orthodontic appliance?
    With removable appliances in every 1-3 months, with traditional fixed ones 2-4 weeks, with modenr fixed ones 6-8 months.
     

  7. Does the orthodontic appliance ache?
    Generally the orthodontic appliance does not ’ache’. Of course on the first week it can cause inconveniences, the teeth can become sensitive, the mucous membrane could be irritated, but all this will pass away after a few days by itself, furthermore we always give some advice what to do. In such cases general painkillers can help ease the pain. In fact most of the patients do not feel any inconvenience after a while. Often we remind the patients: ’if it does not ache, it does not mean it is not working!’
     

  8. Can I do sports with my orthodontic appliance?
    You can. Usually we recommend to use a dental mouth guard.
     

  9. Are there any foods that I cannot eat while wearing the appliance?
    Yes. We explain at the very beginning of the treatment what to watch out, which are the food that you need to be careful with or not to consume. These are, for instance, ice-cream, hard sweets, crispy vegetables and fruits, nuts, sticky foods, such as caramel. If you avoid eating these, you can protect your orthodontic appliance from being damaged and the the treatment will not be prolonged.
     

  10. How often do I have to wash my teeth when the appliance is on?
    At least 4 times a day, after each meal and before going to bad. We thoroughly explain,  teach and practise how to wash your teeth with the appliance!
     

  11. What happens if I need an emergency treatment?
    Fortunately emergency cases are very rare during the orthodontic treatment. Of course, if you suffer from severe pain, or parts of the appliance become damaged, you can give us a call or send an e-mail and we will find an extra appointment for you!
     

  12. Can orthodontic problem be discovered in the colt's tooth?
    Yes. Little children may not be ready for the orthodontic treatment, but s/he can be acquainted with the atmosphere of the surgery, and by controls in every six months, we can monitor the development of the patient and can intervene in the right time.
     

  13. What does early treatment mean?
    This usually means an removable orthodontic appliance treatment for children at the age of 7-10. This generally lasts between 12-24 months. At this age the development of the jaws can be controlled, therefore further complications can be avoided and the existing problems can be improved to a great extent. By this, the self-confidence of children can also improve.
     

  14. Will my child need a fixed orthodontic appliance after the early treatment?
    It depends on many factors. The extent of the problem, the habits of the child, and the type of the removable appliance.
     

  15. Is it too late to start an orthodontic treatment as an adult
    It might be surprising but most of our patients are adults. Health, happiness and self-confidence is just as important for adults as for children. No one is ’too old’ to wear such an appliance!
     

  16. Can an appliance be placed on a crown?
    Yes. A tooth with a crown moves the same way as a normal filled in tooth
     

  17. Why should I choose an orthodontist?
    The teeth, the position of the jaws and the profile of the whole face changes after the orthodontic treatment. Therefore it is very important that the treatment is carried out by a specialist, it needs to be carefully planned and executed. Unlike general dentists, orthodontists receive special, professional training for many years.
